Scientology: Religion Or Bizarre Cult? English 150 Sean Roberts Dec. 13/99 Scientology New Age Religion or Bizarre Cult? 1. Numerous individuals have known about the progressive new strict practice called Scientology. In any case, most of individuals who have known about it, have little information on the standards and practices behind the religion. Truth be told, there is a clouded side behind Scientology, and much hypothesis that the religion is an indoctrinating clique. Numerous individuals are against the religion on account of its mystery, its extraordinary techniques for educating and its supposed utilization of brain control. Scientology, established in 1950 (Hubbard. What is. 3), is an applied strict way of thinking (Hubbard. What is. 4), which is a part of brain research (Fundamentals. 7). Created by Lafayette Ron Hubbard, Scientology was made from revelations coming about because of Hubbard's examination into the psyche and life (Fundamentals. 11). Hubbard asserted that Scientology is for the improvement of man (Fundamentals. 117), and that Scientology can be utilized by a normal individual to carry better request to their life (Fundamentals. 8). Hubbard asserted that Scientology improves the wellbeing, knowledge, capacity, conduct, aptitude and presence of the normal individual (Fundamentals. 8). One of the most major thoughts in Scientology is the conviction that the individual man is distinct into three sections (Hubbard. What is. 5-6): The Mind, the Body and the Thetan. Hubbard accepted that the Thetan, or character of an individual, is distinct from the remainder of the brain voluntarily, and with out causing real passing or mental unhinging (Fundamentals. 5-6). Hubbard was conceived in Tilden, Nebraska in 1911 (Malko 29). It is realized that Hubbard was raised on a Montana dairy cattle farm by his granddad (Malko 30), anyway little else is thought about the initial thirty years of his life (Malko 29). Hubbard's past is best summarized by George Malko, Nothing is ever exact, 2. also, we are never certain when and under what conditions he accomplished something or went somewhere (Malko 29). There are exceptionally expanded cases (Mallia. Judge.1) that Hubbard went all through Asia at age fourteen (Malko 31), and that he left school to lead a campaign into Central America (Malko 32). Anyway it is realized that Hubbard was a sci-fi author and was a natural name to American sci-fi fans before wandering into strict way of thinking (Malko 34). Hubbard was a brilliant man, and acknowledged by numerous who read his work and who knew him. Hubbard passed on of a cerebrum drain on the 24th of January, 1986 (Corydon 406). Hubbard's sci-fi works, portrayed as strong and exceptionally imaginative(Malko 34) are especially intriguing in light of the fact that they offer bits of knowledge into Hubbard's feeling of imagination and creative mind (Malko 34). His sci-fi works additionally open certain equals to specific Scientology standards and convictions (Hubbard. Essentials. 35). As indicated by Church of Scientology reports, people previously came to earth from space 75 million years back, sent into oust here by a malicious warlord named Xenu (Mallia. Holy. 1). Scientology is mainly utilized through the preparing of an individual (Hubbard. Basics. 91-92). Scientologists allude to this technique as reviewing, while the individual who does the preparing is called an inspector. (Hubbard. Essentials. 92). The examiner makes individuals, at their own decision, do different activities, and these activities realize improves in knowledge, conduct and general capability (Hubbard. Basics. 8). An evaluator must follow a severe, and to some degree unusual arrangement of rules when preparing an individual (Hubbard. Basics. 92). These guidelines, spread out in the evaluator's code, incorporate 3. Try not to process a person after 10 p.m. what's more, Do not process a person who is inappropriately taken care of or hungry (Hubbard. What is. 191). The reviewing procedure is helped by the utilization of an exceptionally structured instrument called an Electro-psychometer, or E-meter (Mallia. Holy. 2), which enables the evaluator to find territories of otherworldly trouble or travail (Baskin 1). Like an untruth indicator, the E-meter sends a gentle electrical flow of 1.5 volts through the body while the patient holds a metallic chamber in each hand (Mallia. Holy. 2). Scientologists accept that the photos in the brain contain vitality and mass (Baskin 1). At the point when an individual holding the E-meter cathodes thinks an idea, takes a gander at an image or moves some piece of the receptive brain, he is changing this psychological mass and vitality (Baskin 1). Many would contend that the historical backdrop of atomic vitality and atomic waste started in 1898 when Marie Curie found two radioactive components; polonium and radium.1 The atomic scene was generally peaceful until 1838, when a German researcher, Otto Hahn was effective in exhibiting atomic fission.2 This set off a ready that arrived at the ears of Theodore Roosevelt, who was President of the United States at that point. The Acquisition of Tense by L1 Arabic Learners of English Language Research Proposal

The Acquisition of Tense by L1 Arabic Learners of English Language - Research Proposal Example One clarification for the trouble is the Aspect Hypothesis. There is likewise a Perceptual Salience Hypothesis (Man, 1990). Others have recommended that syntactic information isn't hindered, rather that the reason is extra-syntactic (Prevost and White, 2000). Likewise for Arabic speakers, there is the issue when last consonant groups happen which are stayed away from in their L1. Such phonetic contrasts present challenges (Strange, 1995). Disarray of past tenses was one of the fundamental kinds of blunders in tenses announced in an investigation of Arab students of English at the University of Sudan (Kambal, 1980). As per the Aspect Hypothesis, â€Å"learners partner shapes that imprint time with the lexical perspective inborn in the significance of the verb† (Robinson, 2008:317). Bardovi-Harlig (1998) and Anderson and Shirai (2007) are defenders of the Aspect Hypothesis. Syntactic hypothesis is upheld by any semblance of Donna Lardiere (2007) and is an improvement of Chomsky’s standards. She proposes that the focal inquiry is â€Å"how a student figures out how to relate the specific featural particulars of the objective language †that is, a syntactic portrayal †with their obvious acknowledgment in the input† (Archibald, 2000:103). As per the syntactic hypothesis it is either an inadequacy in the information on punctuation or off base mapping of syntactic portrayals that cause confusions in gaining tense. The trouble in the development of verbal articulations in L1 Arabic Learners of English Language is because of the impact of L2 securing of verbal inflectional morphemes. The relevance of this Aspects Hypothesis will be tried and the elective speculation offered by syntactic hypothesis will be considered inside the setting of SLA (Second Language Acquisition). The Role Of A Superintendent Within A School District

Introduction Much of this clinical experience has been examining the specific role of a superintendent within a school district. I found that the reflections as part of the weekly journal to of particular interest and benefit as I examined he â€Å"Guiding Questions† for this final synthesis essay. Interestingly, my colleagues in this course found these reflections not to be beneficial. During one of our class meetings it was noted that these were not a beneficial exercise and that reflection was not needed. To that, I would counter that reflection s always needed but it is often the easiest item to overlook. In our hectic administrative world, it is easy to become buried in Administrivia. Often we do not event take a moment to move from one crisis to the next. Reflection is the only way we can halt the inexorable march to the end. I for one, was pleased that we were asked to reflect on each week. I took this as an opportunity to examine the actions of the superintend ent and, in a risk free environment, provide my perspective on the positive or negative actions observed or experienced. Hopefully the observations and judgments in those weekly journals remain an academic exercise and not a communique to my superintendent. As I re-read the journal entries and focus them with the lens of the guiding questions, I have some final thoughts about my qualifications and idiosyncrasies that may come into play if ever I was afforded the honor of being a superintendent. Socrates Sense Of Virtue Essay - 1250 Words

Socrates’ sense of virtue, as established in Plato’s Apology of Socrates, Crito, and Symposium collectively, revolves around the pursuit of wisdom, knowledge, and justice, all in an effort to benefit the soul rather than the physical body. Given that this oftentimes contradicts standard values of honor and beauty, Socrates is targeted by many of those around him who oppose his ideas and ways of thinking, especially since the youth begin to criticize the elders’ concern for the trappings of honor and beauty rather than for interior virtues. Unlike Socrates’ case, Aeneas’ sense of virtue complies with the standard societal definition, emphasizing pietas, or respect for the gods and dedication to family and community. In his efforts to†¦show more content†¦29d). Unlike his fellows Athenians, Socrates cares little â€Å"whether a person is beautiful, or rich, or famous in any other way that most people admire† (Sym. 216e). Unwilling to c ompromise his own values, Socrates continues to challenge those around him, even at the risk of losing his own life. In Plato’s Crito, Socrates likens himself to Achilles who, insistent on avenging Patroclus’ death, â€Å"belittled death and danger, fearing much more to live as a bad man and not to avenge his friends† (Apo. 28c). Socrates holds little regard for his wellbeing when the threat of being unfaithful to his beliefs is at hand. Socrates faces a lot of opposition from the public because of the nature of his teachings as he attempts to demonstrate the value of knowledge and justice. In his apologia, having been charged with â€Å"corrupting the young† (Aen. 24b), Socrates questions Meletus mercilessly, forcing him into contradicting himself and leaving him speechless with â€Å"nothing to say† (Apo. 24d). Much of Socrates’ teachings revolve around making others aware of their own ignorance, as he does with the politician, â€Å"[try ing] to show him that he supposed he was wise, but was not† (Apo. 21c). Plato’s Symposium recounts the speech of Alcibiades in which Alcibiades describes â€Å"what an extraordinary effect [Socrates’] words always had† (Sym. 215d). Constructing Proxy Variables to Measure

Question: Discuss about the Constructing Proxy Variables to Measure. Answer: Introduction: Improper management of time has reduced the studying hours. Studying late night, results in extreme fatigue. I want to score better marks in this semester. This can be possible only if I devote more time into study (Jo, Kim Yoon, 2015). I have understood that managing time for this semester is crucial because unlike other semester, I will not get much time this semester unlike other semesters. Time management was not an issue for me and has never affected my grades, but I have always completed my syllabus in a hurry before every examination. This is the reason, I want to manage the time well and perform better in this semester. Time management is also a crucial managerial skill that is important for future success. In order to improve my management skills, managing time holds equal importance. I see myself as a successful leader. For a leader, managing time is very crucial along with managing the members of a team (Kimani, 2014). If I start improving my time management skills from now, I shall be able to manage my team and shall prove to be a good leader. Pre-test and Post-test measures: I will record the study time and other activities that I do regularly. Currently I spend less time for studies because I have to attend regular lecture classes and also have to do other regular activities. Moreover, I have also realised that the time that I spend for studies, is not enough to cover up the huge syllabus of the semester. This is the reason, I will record my activities and progress from time to time that will eventually help me to realise if any kind of change is required in the scheduling of my action plan. Week by week progress will be recorded (Rapp, Bachrach Rapp, 2013). This way I can easily keep a trace of my activities. I will implement the new schedule by 1st week and the activities will be recorded every week. By the end of 9th week, I believe that I will achieve my goals. Action Plan: Week Task Expected Outcome 1 Sketch out a plan for doing different activities and strictly follow the set To-do-list. This list has to be realistic enough that the framed plan can be easily carried on. It is important not to frame something unusual that would be tough to achieve and would ultimately lead to disappointment. I will be able to prioritise things and would be able to sketch a better To-do list for me. 2-4 I will follow the schedule and perform each task as the schedule. This way I would also be able to prioritise the tasks and shall continue with the schedule that suits the best. I will able to manage time for every task. It is only when other tasks get scheduled I shall be able to devote more time in studies. 5 If required certain changes can be made in the schedule and the timing can be changed or restructured. This re-scheduling has to be done quickly with proper care because there shall be no scope to waste time for creating another to-do-list (Beausaert et al., 2013). It is expected, not many changes will be made because the prior list will be made with much consciousness. Better management of time can be done. It is expected that if changes are made in the schedule, it would bring betterment in the overall planning. 6-8 Continue with the proposed schedule and study more. As my focus is to increase the study hours, scheduling would prioritise studies and not other activities. I would also reduce spending time with my friends because I have observed that a lot of time is wasted with them. I would be able to complete the syllabus of my course. The aim is not only to complete the syllabus but also to do revision of the same to get in depth knowledge and understanding of the subject. 9 Check the improvement. The result of the action plan will be obtained by the end of the 9th week. I can easily check my improvements if I would be able to do the task according to my plans. It is only by checking that how much I have been able to complete my course syllabus, the achievement of my plan can be measured. I have made much improvement in studies. I have also covered the entire syllabus of the course and would be ready to study some extra study material for better references for my examinations. Language Of Battle Essays - English Grammar, Axiology, Ethics

Language of Battle The Language Battle In todays society there are two philosophical views that have become enemies and are constantly battling it out. These two views are from the prescriptivists and the descriptivists. The prescriptivists believe that there is a certain way that language should be written, and that language follows a certain set of rules believed to be prestigious. The descriptivists believe that language is described with the use of certain use of words and syntax. Since, todays society has had many technological advances many tend to lean more towards the descriptivists way of thinking. Many people believe that if a person has a higher educational level that they would most likely have a higher prestige in the way that they talked or presented themselves. In a survey that was recently taken on dialect 100% of the people said that the sentence The land was given to Susan and me. Is correct. The prescriptivists way of thinking prevailed in this form of dialect. One sentence that made most people think was This is the play in which he preformed in. The prescriptivists point of view was put into play in this situation. Only 40% of the people picked up on the fact that this sentence ended with a preposition and 60% said that there was nothing wrong and that is how they would say it. The other speech form that was most diverse was the plural of you. The prescriptivists say that the correct answer is you all. Only 30% of the people got this question right. The most common was the answer yall by 40% of the people. 20% of the people said you guys and 10% said your. Again wi th educational level the descriptivists way seems to prevail. Since the times have changed so much with all the technological advances language has changed in time too. As people started to age the answers started to be very different. On the question that asked what is the name of the object that a baby is brought home in from the hospital if it had wheels and could be taken for a walk. I found that the age groups from 15-20, 21-30, and 31-40 100% called it a stroller. In the 41-50 age group 50% said buggy and 50% called it a pram. The older people in the 60+ group 100% called it a carriage. The term carriage is one that is a lot older and not used very often. When asked, what utensil is used to fry food in? The older 60+ age group 100% said it was called a skillet, but the other age groups referr

Edwin Long essays

Edwin Long essays Art is a talent acquired by experience, study, or observation learning that requires the conscious use of skillful and creative imagination. A piece of artwork reflects the culture that created it, though this might not be apparent to its contemporary observers. Art heavily depends on context. The available materials, subjects, themes, metaphors, politics, and technology influence the creation of painting. The audience's insight into a work improves as an understanding of the artist's culture grows. In this essay, I will give a brief overview of Edwin Longs life, discuss the events that were occurring during the time he painted Vashti Refuses the Kings Summons, and explain the story behind this painting. Edwin Long was born in Bath in the year of 1829. Edwins father was an artist therefore; he had an early and precocious talent for drawing (Bills 12). He began his career as a portraitist and in his youth, he twice tried to enroll at the Royal Academy Schools. However, was refused entry due to deficiencies in his drawing. He then decided to move back to Bath because of the setbacks. He visited Spain in 1857, on the advice of John Phillip, who was his teacher (22). Edwin listened to John and visited the country regularly between 1857 until 1873. He was very impressed and interested in the work of Murillo. After seeing Murillos work, Edwin began to paint scenes of Spanish life and portraiture. He visited Egypt and Syria in 1874 and his career took a new direction. The direction it took made him become an orientalist painter. He started to develop large historical works illustrating passages from the bible and the customs of the ancient civilizations of Greece, Rome, and Eg ypt (32). Edwins paintings consisted of a rich and exotic style. They were strong in detail and often on canvases of large size, allowing him to show long processions and enormous palaces. Engineering - Quality Management Research Paper

Engineering - Quality Management - Research Paper Example Looking back to the early 1980s a revolution, which can be perceived as a not-so-quiet, has been in effect in the global business. This has been an ideas revolution involving the questions of how to do business. The revolution can be said to be largely spearhead by three individuals, that is, Joseph Juran, Philip Crosby as well as W. Edward Deming. Thesis Statement The purpose of this paper is to access the similarities and the differences from the works of Deming and Crosby in quality management. On similarities, the paper will address; Customer Requirement as an important standard, the responsible quality management, goal of Quality as well as management Perspective. On the aspect of differences, the paper will address; The Basic orientation to quality, the question of what is Quality, implementation’s chief elements, inspection/ Defect control, improvement Basis, management perspective and cost of quality Discussion Similarities Customer Requirement as an important standard According to the work by Deming, he is of the view that the presence of a consumer is brought about by a necessity and as such, it is the most vital aspect of a system of production, that is, where there are no consumers, what then is the need for production? Crosby’s work define quality as conforming to certain set of specifications, which have been stipulated by the management of an organization and not some concept of goodness full of vagueness. The specifications entailed in quality are not made arbitrary either (Baxter & MacLeod, 2008). As such, they ought to be set in accordance with the needs as well as wants of the customers. The responsible quality management team According to the work advanced by Deming, it advances that quality is designed in the boardroom. In his notion of quality, he says that ideas such as; sincerity, hard work, personal responsibility as well as decency, indeed are responsible for the changed management world. He says that it is unsubstantial to just perform a task to the best of your capacity. It is necessary that one becomes aware of what he is working on. Crosby work indeed shares the same notion (Baxter & MacLeod, 2008). According to him, improvement in quality ought to commence from the top. In order to come up with a manufacturing process, with no defect, or what he term as zero defects, then the management of any organization must then set the suitable atmosphere and the tone whereby the employees will easily follow. If the management fails to establish a production system with zero defects, then it is not closer enough to a quality product. Goal of Quality In both works, they advance that quality improvement is an unending process. In Deming’s work, it is suggested that in order to meet and exceed the needs of a customer, it is necessary that there are continuous improvements. In the same notion, Crosby points out that the continuous improvements must be enhanced and as such, it should be done by setting a production with zero defects (John & Barnes, 2006). Though both works share common grounds in regard to the quality management, the largest part they share are the differences on the notion of quality management. Management Perspective In both works, drawing of comparison is mentioned

The Battle For Berlin - Research Paper Example There was a huge difference between the strength of German and Russian forces in all aspects, which also played its role in the defeat of the German army. The Russian forces were superior to the German army in terms of equipment and troops, which helped them defeat German forces and race towards the city of Berlin. The major countries, which sent their forces to carry out attack on Berlin, were Russia, Poland, Romania, and Czechoslovakia. â€Å"The Red Army played the dominant role in the defeat of the Reich, demoting the Anglo-American war effort to secondary or tertiary importance† (Davies 2006). Over 2.5 million men including 78000 Polish army men attacked Berlin defeating the German army all over. Describe the room youre in Essay Example for Free

Describe the room youre in Essay Still, a thick veil of cigarette smoke filtered my view of the dark, dank, desolate sitting room, and made the black walls appear grey. The early hours of the evening had consisted of me repeatedly lighting and leaving cigarettes to burn out between my fingers, not one of the twenty met my lips, as intended. The looming smoke crept slowly out of a miniscule hole in the top left hand corner of the window fame, to my right. I lazily calculated, judging by the time of the humungous clock on the wall opposite me, that Id been slumped on this icy black settee for over 9 hours now. Time moved slower than Id ever known it, it was gradually approaching 2:24am. There still remained a constant murmur of Freddie Mercury telling me he could dim the lights and sing me songs full of sad things- his voice leaked aimlessly from the 2 white headphones lying forgotten on the bitterly cold tiled floor. My dog sat protectively at my feet, staring at me. Awfully tired, but reluctant to leave me to sit alone. I edged forward on the settee, the music seemed louder from there. The distinct scent of the condolence flowers, which lay in a tattered heap on the coffee table in front of me, under my tear-drenched scarf, danced through both of my nostrils. It was surprisingly strong. I glanced down at the dog, who obviously saw this as an invitation to a far more comfortable seat. His black, shiny front legs, one at a time, slowly heaved his heavily muscled shoulders onto the settee beside me. Followed by his short hind legs, which failed to be able to push the remaining torso onto the slippery leather seat. His struggling eyes pleaded for a helping hand. I swung my right arm over his broad back and under his barrel-like rib cage, gripping tightly and pulling toward myself, he appreciatively licked my arm, and then settled next to me. After a few short moments, he sunk down into the settee and lolled his head onto my leg, where he stared back morosely at me, breathing in deeply and almost sighing as he forced breaths out. His brow furrowed into the form of self-pity and grief, now and then throwing the odd whimper at me. Hed always been good at mirroring my feelings. The wind was audibly picking up speed and strength, it angrily punched the windowpane several times, before giving in and sending a fleet of fat, hefty, hard-hitting rain drops to pummel the windowpane some more. The door was trembling from being harassed so fiercely by the wind, it bellowed and whistled, trying the door handle and rattling the lock. My heart felt the enraged booming of the thunder as it rolled through the thick black clouds, calling for the lightning. The room lit up, everything was visible for a few short seconds. Then, when the lightning clocked off, the quiet, lonely darkness carried on the remainder of his shift. A lone screw flew towards me, breezed past my right cheek and pinged off the wall behind me, as the French doors swung open with a sudden, monstrous clash. The aggressive wind had forced its way into the house, it bled through the building. It raced up the stairs, slamming doors in a childish fashion, while it ripped the photographs off the walls and crunched the glass in the frames, it spun around the curtains tearing them from the pole, as if it had a vendetta against the dicor. The hellish gale swirled tauntingly around me, pulling my cardigan and twirling my hair around my throat. The dog lunged onto my lap, and began to warn off the frosty blasts with a series of blood curdling, deep and defensive barks and snarls. Silence fell. I stood. Wrapping my cardigan around me tightly, and following my bodyguard of a dog, I peered out of the double doors and down the bleak corridor. The front door was closed. I returned to resume sitting on the sunken leather settee with my dog. As I sat, my left hand attempted to correct my windswept hair, while the right cradled my proud pet. I felt the beginnings of a snarl rekindling from the pit of his stomach; it rose up into his throat and gushed out between gritted teeth at the rain that spat spitefully at the window. Essay --

Soviet gymnasts astounded the world with highly disciplined and difficult performances, setting a precedent that continues. The new medium of television has helped publicize and initiate a modern age of gymnastics. Both men's and women's gymnastics now attract considerable international interest, and excellent gymnasts can be found on every continent. Nadia Comaneci received the first perfect score, at the 1976 Summer Olympics held in Montreal, Canada. She was coached in Romania by coach, (Hungarian ethnicity), Bella Karolyn. Comaneci scored four of her perfect tens on the uneven bars, two on the balance beam and one in the floor exercise. Even with Nadia's perfect scores, the Romanians lost the gold medal to the Soviet Union. Nevertheless, Comaneci became an Olympic icon. In 2006, FIG introduced a new points system for Artistic gymnastics in which scores are no longer limited to 10 points. The system is used in the US for elite level competition. Unlike the old code of points, ther e are two separate scores, an execution score and a difficulty score. In the previous system, the "exe...

Advertising Bias Essay

Marketing and advertising companies are constantly playing on gender roles and stereotypes. Both men and women are portrayed in certain ways to help make products seem more attractive to the same or opposite sex. Men are pictured as lazy, dumb slobs while women are pictured as gentle, beautiful, sexual, and submissive. In children’s ads, boys are shown as rough and interested in action games while girls are more quiet and interested in dolls. Though these stereotypes are not always true, they are what Americans have come to accept about gender and society. Advertisements depend upon painting evocative pictures about these stereotypes in order to entice the consumer to buy the product. Many ads use a sloppy, idiotic, couch potato to appeal to women in products that are commonly used by women such as cooking items and cleaning products. By using the male stereotype, women tend to feel empowered or that they have the upper hand when the usually â€Å"dominant† male is depicted as inferior. While downplaying the male role has become more accepted as a show of politically correct sexism, it is still politically incorrect to do such to women. See more: My Writing Process Essay Some view this as an unfair double standard. Role reversal is often utilized in advertising with women as the focus of the ad. The most common use of stereotyping with women is ads is using them to promote or sell a product through sexual appeal. Whether to a male or female audience, women are portrayed as extremely beautiful and sexy and often in suggestive poses. It attracts men for the obvious reasons, and attracts other women because they aspire to be a certain way or have a certain beautiful quality or feature. Women are also advertised as gentle and submissive in contrast to males. Feminists are against these types of stereotyping because they believe it itemizes women. In society males and females are picked on for their underlying qualities. These qualities have become so widespread and commonplace, today they are considered stereotypes. Companies use these to attract buyers with the idea that they are somewhat better than the opposite sex in some way. The underlying nature in ads points out flaws of men and women and uses them to exploit certain behaviours or mannerisms that will help sell a product with its image.

Grammar Exercise on Denotation and Connotation

This exercise will help you distinguish between the denotative and connotative meanings of words. The denotative meaning of a word is the definition youll find in the dictionary. Theres not a lot of wiggle room when it comes to the interpretation of denotative words—which is why theyre commonly used when its important to ensure what youre writing or saying cannot either be misinterpreted or interpreted in more than one way, and the reason youll often find denotative words in the language of things such as the legal documents, medical papers, scientific studies, and technical manuals (at least, the well-written ones). A connotative word, on the other hand, may have several meanings or nuances—some positive and some negative. Connotative words are the stuff of poetry, fiction, and even advertising. Rather than bringing to mind a concise image, connotative words are used to evoke a certain atmosphere or inspire feelings. Instructions In each of the following sentences, the italicized word has a fairly neutral connotation. For each word in italics, list two synonyms (words with similar denotations): one with a negative connotation and the other with a positive connotation. In addition to reviewing the glossary entries for denotation and connotation, you may find it helpful to read the introduction to Choosing the Best Words: Denotations and Connotations.
